The cutlass is a naval version of the largely land-based hanger. Both swords are similar to short sabres with a single edge and slight curve. The short blades are intended for confined spaces and close quarters combat, quick and efficient, and surprisingly well balanced with a balance point of 2 inches. This makes this cutting sword positively deadly on the thrust. This style of shell guard cutlass saw the height of its use in the 18th century, particularly amid the Golden Age of Piracy. Famed-privateer-turned-pirates such as Benjamin Hornigold Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, frequently favored a side arm of this configuration.
